The Christian Home Educators Association of
California, Inc. is a non-profit ministry established in 1982 to
provide information, support, and training to the home education
community throughout the state.
CHEA operates under the following statement of faith. Members are
not asked to sign any statement of agreement, but are expected to
understand that CHEA functions as a Christian organization, seeking
to glorify God in all we do.
* We believe the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, the final
authority of faith and life, without error in its original writing
both in doctrine and historical details, and that all true knowledge
is consistent with its revelation.
* We believe that there is one self-existent God who has always been
and will always be, manifest in three persons, Father, Son and Holy
Spirit, and that knowing Him truly is the foundation of all
knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.
The mission of the Christian Home Educators Association of
California is to advance the Kingdom of Jesus Christ by promoting
private Christian home education as an outstanding educational
opportunity; providing information, training and support to the
homeschool community; and protecting the God-given right of parents
to direct the education and training of their children, to the glory
of God.
Did you know that you could donate to CHEA at any time?
Just as retailers across the country are noticing a slump in sales,
and events are attracting fewer attendees, CHEA has noticed a
similar slump in our income (despite the slight rise in the Annual
Convention attendance). A significant amount of donations is needed
for CHEA to continue to serve the private Christian homeschooling
community. Some Members have contacted us regarding regular, monthly
donations, and these are greatly appreciated.

This historical record has been compiled at the request of the
Hartland Board, in an attempt to as accurately as possible record
the events of the early days of our experience at Hartland. Some of
these experiences are a matter of record in the Office of Records of
Tulare County, Visalia, CA.
Other items are from records of our own involving sales and
purchases where title company or attorney assistance was used. In
addition to these, the carefully evaluated memories of Hartland
members, as well as others who had a direct participation in each of
the early events, became the basis of our records.
The whole Bible is the inspired Word of God and is the supreme and
final authority in all matters of faith and conduct. II Peter 1:21,
II Timothy 3:16
There is one God eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit. ll Corinthians 13:14
Jesus Christ was begotten by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin
Mary, and is true God and true Man.
The Holy Spirit is a person and is co-equal with God the Father and
the Son; convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment;
regenerates and indwells the believers, is their constant guide and
teacher, and enabling power for victorious living and dedicated
service. John 16: 7-8, Titus 3:5, John 16:13, Acts 1:8

Welcome to one of the most exciting, challenging, frustrating and
fullfilling journey's of your life. Perhaps you are starting out on
your journey with confidence, perhaps with trepidation, probably
some of both. All of us who contributed to this website were once
where you are now, and although we have as many different paths as
we have homeschooling parents and children, we are all so glad that
we had once had the courage that you have now, and made the choice
you are now making. No matter what methods or philosophies we tried,
used, or discarded we all seem to agree on one point. We are so glad
that we decided to take this time with our children. As you proceed
on your journey, may your family be filled with love, your learning
filled with excitement, and your days filled with adventure.
The HomeSchool Association of California has been around since 1987
when a small group of Bay Area homeschooling moms got together to
start what was then called the Northern California Homeschool
Association. Since then we've grown to a statewide organization.
Those original families have moved on to new life stages, and passed
their vision on to new members, that vision being an inclusive
homeschooling organization dedicated to the support of homeschooling
families in all their many flavors. We hold to the belief that
homeschooling families are the ones best able to make their own
educational choices. We are a non-profit volunteer organization.
Homeschooling isn't new. History is full of self-starters who
bypassed the classroom, sometimes with brilliant results: Edison
left school at age 7 and was soon building chemistry sets in the
cellar; Dickens picked up much of his knowledge on the streets. But
the practice of parents teaching kids at home didn't draw much
attention until the 1980s, when many fundamentalist Christians,
distressed by what they saw as declining academic rigor and a lack
of moral guidance, began pulling their children from school.
Homeschooling became a full-fledged movement, with its own
publications, support networks and Internet curriculum providers.
No single organization tracks the numbers of homeschoolers
nationwide, but using state-by-state data, the National Home
Education Research Institute estimates that 1.3 million to 1.7
million students were educated at home last year--or roughly 1 in 33
school-aged children. Over the past decade, according to the
institute, the number has risen by some 7 to 15 percent each year.
It's unclear how many homeschoolers are currently of high school
age, but according to the Educational Testing Service, 5,663
students who took the sat last year described themselves as
homeschooled.
