The phone rang in the Day's office "Wise Choice Educational
Services, Mrs. Day speaking, how can I help you?". An unsure voice
replies "Good morning, my name is Mrs. Smith. I have heard you speak
at a conference two years ago. At that time I really enjoyed
listening to the different characteristics of a child with learning
problems and thought that many applied to our son but my husband
wanted to wait. I used the best curriculum and taught him all the
phonics I could but he does not retain it like the other children
do.
The past year was very difficult. He is getting really frustrated
and so do we. We need help." Or "My name is Mrs. Holland. I have
homeschooled my children for the past six years and never went to
your workshops because I never thought it was for us... until last
week when a friend loaned me one of your tapes. I need you to see my
son. " These are typical phone calls that David and Suzanne receive.
Suzanne understands very well the period of time somebody often
needs before asking for help.
Suzanne, a French Canadian from Quebec, was working as a principal
in a public school when she accepted a position as girl head
counsellor in a summer camp for socially challenged children. David,
an Ontarian teacher, shared the responsibility as head counsellor
for the boys.
They were married one year later. They both enjoyed teaching until
they worked full time as associate director of the camp ministering.
They started a private practice of assessment and remediation for
children with reading and attention difficulties.
When their first child was five, Suzanne recognized signs of
learning disabilities in his drawings. The child's drawing of
himself is a useful psychometric tool which reveals his own
awareness of his body in space and yields information on the
maturity of the central nervous system to be able to learn.
Their son was not learning efficiently in spite of the best
educational tools, like one of the best phonic program, and the
one-on-one attention that the parents were providing through their
homeschooling effort. Unfortunately, David and Suzanne's denial of
the problem did not allow them to help their son until they honestly
faced it, two years later. Psychometric tests showed that their son
was gifted in spite of some learning inefficiencies.
Acknowledging their need of additional training was their second
step. They were determined to address the root causes of the problem
instead of trying to compensate for his learning weaknesses.
Suzanne's research led them to choose a neurodevelopmental approach
to learning. Following the home-based program, the increase in their
son's learning processing skills was amazing.
The test results confirmed significant improvement. When he was in
grade 7, he obtained 99% on a written composition done for a course
that he took at a local private school. The results are lasting. For
the past nine years Suzanne has used these techniques with hundreds
of children and has witnessed exciting improvement which would have
not been possible without working on the development of the central
nervous system's learning functions in conjunction with the
academic.
